Tenerife and The Abama

December 17th, 2009

Director of Oundle Travel Paula Cockcroft has just returned from a week inspecting hotel’s in Tenerife, with some interesting findings !

Paula started her stay with 2 nights at The Bahia de Duque with mixed thoughts on this property.  Although classed as a 5* Deluxe property, the resort has a slightly dated feel, and is quite old fashioned in parts. The setting however, is stunning with attractive free form swimming pools leading down to a superb beach.  The hotel’s position in Costa Adeje is good, with good quality shops and restuarants nearby. Breakfast was superb, with a fabulous choice of quite literally everything !  All staff were extremely well trained and courteous. Dinner was also of an equal standard, although the restuarant lacked atmosphere, this was purely down to the fact it was early December, and the occupancy of the hotel was less than 50%.

The Spa at The Bahia de Duque is beautiful, brand new, and has a cool contemporary feel, staff were very helpful and polite, although the two treatments I had were expensive and slightly amateurish !

Paula then moved to The Abama, a 5* Deluxe property located at Guia de Isora, 20 minutes by car from Costa Adeje.  The Abama was built six years ago and is a true 5* property.  We were met in reception with 2 glasses of champagne on arrival, along with a very smooth check-in procedure. Our room was upgraded to a Junior Suite and was absolutely huge, contemporary in style, with a fabulous dressing room, a large sitting area.  The bathroom was to die for with contemporary fittings and complimentary Bulgari toiletries.  The bed was huge and one of the best hotel beds I have slept in, complete with a pillow menu !!  Rooms were serviced swiftly and the evening service was timed perfectly.  The Junior Suite would easily sleep 2 adults and about 6 children - HUGE !!

The public areas of The Abama are immaculate, all the staff were polite and courteous. The restaurants were all excellent with an excellent level of service and choice of menu throughout. The Sommelier in Pampa Verona was also superb !!    The grounds of The Abama are immaculate, and if you don’t fancy walking there is always a golf buggy waiting to take you !!  The Mirador pool at the bottom of the beach is quiet with chill out music with a fantastic poolside menu, tapas included !

The private beach at The Abama is reached by a cable car, which proved quite a novelty for the children and is really great, again with a full poolside bar offering snacks and drinks throughout the day.    Children are exceptionally well catered for with a superb creche from 6 months - 2 years, so definitely a baby friendly bolthole !!  The children’s club is complimentary and offers care from 9 am until midnight !!   All staff were English speaking, in fact most of them were English and very professionally run, offering a wide range of activities.  The Spa at The Abama is beautiful, treatments a little on the expensive side, but a relaxing pampering experience.

All in all The Abama is a superbly run hotel with high standards of service and attention to detail, I would not hesitate to recommend or indeed return !! The staff are excellent and we couldn’t fault them in any way. On last thing the all important weather !  Temepratures ranged from 23 - 25 degrees every day, slight cloud coverage at times, but when the sun did come out it was HOT, and ideal for a week of winter sunshine !

Properties also visited : Vincci Plantation, Jardin Tropical, Jardin Nivaria, The Sheraton, The Mirador, Sir Anthony, Bahia de Duque.

Perth ~ A beautiful, relaxed city and visitors should not miss Kings Park, Cottesloe Beach and Fremantle, with its cafe culture and maritime museum. Three and a half hours south of Perth is the stunning Margaret River region, with its wineries and quaint B&B’s. Other unforgettable day trips include Rottnest Island, The Pinnacle and Wave Rock.

Brisbane ~ Brisbane makes a great starting point for an Australia Holiday, especially for first timers. Visitors can explore the city by CityCat, ride a bike along the Brisbane River and enjoy the vibe of Fortitude Valley. There is easy road access from here to the Sunshine and Gold Coasts as well as Virgin connections to Cairns and the Whitsunday Islands and for access to the Great Barrier Reef.

Melbourne ~ A great city for food, wine, culture, shopping , events and the beach. Exploration beyond Melbourne should include a drive down the Great Ocean Road, where you can canoe with a platypus, see seals and dolphins in their natural habitats on a seal cruise, view whales from above on a helicopter flight or simply take a guided walk to see the great wildlife.

Sydney ~ Of course Sydney is Australia’s most iconic city and very visitor friendly. We recommend visitors head straight to Circular Quay for must dos’ like a harbour cruise or the Harbour Bridge Climb, a tour of the Opera House, or a ferry ride across the bay to Manly. Elsewhere in the city, Darling Harbour, the Queen Victoria Building for shopping, and the Botanical Gardens are well worth a stop, as are the many seafood restaurants and some chill out time on Bondi Beach.
