Floating and playful and teasing, the Sami people believed that the Aurora Borealis was a celestial God, and to this day, many a local will not dare to attract them by waving or whistling.
Auroras are predominantly green but the more spectacular occurrences can light up the sky with billowing displays of green, red, blue and occasionally violet. The intensity of the displays varies as can the colours. A typical display might start with a glowing green arc spanning the sky from east to west. If it develops fully the lights may become so bright that they cast shadows on the ground. The most breathtaking sight comes when they begin a rapid colourful dance that will have even the locals gazing at the sky in wonderment.
